Wente Vineyards Featured in Sunset Magazine
Considering the amount of California Chardonnay we drink in this country, you’d think the wine was invented in the state. Oh, wait, it was--as we know it. The man to credit for that is Ernest Wente, who planted cuttings from the south of France at his family-run Wente Vineyards in Livermore, California, exactly 100 years ago. Today, a whopping amount (about 75 percent) of the state’s Chardonnay comes from a version of the Wente clone. Fifth-generation winemaker Karl Wente keeps the tradition alive with four different bottles, listed from light to rich.
