Ever since he embarked on one of popular music’s most celebrated careers, James Taylor has been known as a master songwriter --an artist whose work has been intriguingly interpreted by performers as varied as Linda Ronstadt, Willie Nelson and Eric Clapton. James Taylor began building that lexicon early in life, and with the 1968 release of a self-titled album—it was well-formed enough to draw him admirers from around the world. Taylor’s poignant melodies and incisive lyrical bent soon attracted a much larger audience—folks who grasped the emotional nuances of classics like “Fire and Rain.” Acclaim followed Taylor throughout the years, with platinum sales awards bestowed upon such albums as Dad Loves His Work and That’s Why I’m Here. The singer also continued to earn accolades from his peers, who awarded Grammys to his 1998 album Hourglass. For just as long, however, Taylor has proven himself a remarkably gifted interpreter—a skill he puts to use on his latest offering, the appropriately titled Covers. “I’d been wanting to do an album of songs we’ve played live over the years, but wanted to do things that were enough of a departure to make them worth doing,” says the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer.
